Banana Slugs! - Spencer

       Ok, It's official.
We love (emphasis on love) Banana slugs.
Seriously, these guys are the perfect combo of slime, yellow, banana, and swag all packed into a 1 in. to 10 in. bundle of Awesome tree saving slug.
We went camping last week, mom's got dibs on that blog, so we settled with one about our new favorite animals. Apparently banana slugs live in redwood forests and they are essential for redwoods to live by eating bugs and bacteria and secreting a slime that then hardens and seals around the tree. Our campsite just happened to be 20 miles south from the Oregon border, smack-dab in the middle of redwood country.
 Sweet.

I think these mollusks are nocturnal because each morning they were everywhere. I almost stepped on the one in the rocks. It was in the middle of the road. Good thing I noticed, maybe that's why they're yellow!

Now, a tribute to all the banana slugs, 'cause they're just that boss!

Oh yeah, and they can have spots too!

  1. Gross and cool at the same time. So what exactly do they do for the redwoods?

  2. Thanks, they eat bacteria and bugs, and secrete a goo that hardens and creates a seal around the tree.

  5. We used to see them on my mission in Washington state (where, if we weren't careful, we'd get mushrooms growing in our bathroom). A couple of times I even dreamed about them, but in my dreams they were, like, monster size. I didn't know they did all those helpful things.
